A government expert panel in charge of discussing regulations regarding land purchases by foreign nationals met for the first time on Wednesday, with plans to submit a policy proposal this summer.
The panel, headed by University of Tokyo professor emeritus Akira Morita, convened as the government aims to submit a bill to tighten restrictions on land purchases by foreign nationals in the current parliamentary session, which is expected to run through July 17.
Lawmakers¡¯ calls to further restrict foreign nationals owning land, which is on the rise, come amid tighter policies on foreign nationals being featured in the July Upper House election and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who is taking a hard-line approach to immigration, taking office in October.
