Overseas-based buyers accounted for 3.5% of newly built condominiums purchased in Tokyo¡¯s 23 wards in the first half of 2025, the land ministry said in its first nationwide survey of acquisitions by overseas residents.
The figure has risen sharply in some areas of central Tokyo ¡ª up from 1.6% for the entire year in 2024 ¡ª demonstrating growing interest from abroad, according to the survey released Tuesday.
But since Japan¡¯s real estate registry does not include buyers¡¯ nationalities, the ministry said it was difficult to judge how many foreign buyers are purchasing real estate in the country based on this survey. The ministry identified overseas buyers based on their registered addresses.
