Tokyo police arrested a 22-year-old woman Thursday on suspicion of dismembering and abandoning the body of her infant after remains were found inside a freezer at the office of a dispatch-style sex business in the capital’s Sumida Ward.

The Metropolitan Police Department said the suspect, Rei Obara, an employee of the business, has no fixed address. She has admitted to the allegations, investigators said.

“I thought I had to hide it, so I cut the body up,” Obara told police. “But I wanted to keep the baby close to me, so I put it in the freezer.”

Police allege that Obara dismembered the infant’s body around March somewhere in Tokyo and stored the head and limbs in the freezer compartment of a shared refrigerator at her workplace until at least Dec. 6. She is suspected of discarding the torso in a trash bin at the office.

According to police, the infant was a girl believed to have been less than 1 month old. The head was wrapped in a plastic bag, while the limbs were placed inside plastic food storage containers. Obara’s fingerprints were found on the plastic bag.

Obara told police that she gave birth alone at the office, adding that the baby did not cry or move when it was born.

“I lost consciousness, and when I came to, the baby had changed color,” she said, according to investigators.

She later cut up the body using a utility knife in a hotel room several days after the birth, police said. Obara continued working at the business even after the incident came to light, according to investigators.

A male employee discovered the remains in the refrigerator, which was used regularly by staff, while cleaning the office on the night of Dec. 6 and contacted the police.

The office is located in a busy entertainment district near JR Kinshicho Station and serves as a waiting area for employees. It operated 24 hours a day, was not locked, and was accessed by dozens of workers, including those from affiliated businesses, police said.
