While many global market participants in the semiconductor world took note of the explosive forecasts for capital expenditures announced in U.S. earnings reports by Microsoft, Meta, Google and Amazon in recent months, it is becoming clear that the artificial intelligence spending boom is accelerating globally — perfect timing as U.S.-Japan relations are moving from strength to strength.

The four above-mentioned firms have altogether earmarked $380 billion for AI-related investments.

And while the powerful rally in U.S. and Japanese technology stocks has led to broad index rallies that still continue, one would think that the timing of U.S. President Donald Trump`s visit to Japan to meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi could not have been better after Takaichi pledged to realize a new “golden age” in the relationship.

All accounts suggest that Takaichi — a loyal member of the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s faction — and Trump are forging a path toward more economic cooperation and stronger ties in areas such as agriculture, minerals and defense.

As Japan continues to carry out an initiative from May 2021, when 100 members of the Diet engineered a plan that would promote a renaissance of the Japanese semiconductor industry, full cooperation from both the private and public sectors is clear. This group led by the ruling party’s then-Secretary-General Akira Amari became known as the Strategy for Semiconductors and Digital Industry.

In addition to the obvious participation by large firms and government institutions, Japanese schools such as the University of Tokyo, Tohoku University and Kyoto University are heavily involved in advanced research and development and industry collaboration. And the requirements for high-speed, high-capacity storage in AI give Japan an edge when collaborating with U.S. universities.

At a recent summit of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations, the U.S. and Japan established the University Partnership for Workforce Advancement and Research And Development in Semiconductors program.

About 40 professionals involved in semiconductor research and design from the Netherlands have visited Japan several times. Also, U.S.-Japan semiconductor workshops have been held to allow the U.S. semiconductor community to discuss in detail how Japanese researchers view the future of microchip design from the Japan perspective. It is worth noting that Japan has both unique designs and strong basic materials technology.

It will be exciting to see the new developments play out at the Semicon Japan 2025 exhibition to be held from Dec. 17 to 19. This show, coming on the heels of the U.S. presidential visit, will draw many participants and interested parties from around the world.
