Sherry Drury doesn’t declare her dreams. She just runs, letting the work speak for itself.

“I have dreams, but I prefer to keep them to myself,” she said. “It doesn’t mean much if I don’t follow through.”

This fall, the 18-year-old middle-distance runner will begin a new chapter as a student athlete at the University of Washington, entering a new training environment after growing up within Japan’s school sports system.

Amid the heat and humidity in Japan, a good night’s sleep is growing increasingly elusive without the heavy use of air conditioning.
