Japan had already qualified for the quarterfinal round of the 2026 World Baseball Classic before taking the field against Australia on Sunday night.
Thanks to Masataka Yoshida, the defending champion is heading to Miami as the winner of Pool C.
Yoshida gave his team the lead with a two-run home run in the seventh inning, and Japan overcame a valiant effort by the Australian pitching staff in a 4-3 victory as it survived a scare in front of a crowd of more than 40,000 that included Emperor Naruhito.
