The Vancouver Whitecaps re-signed goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka through June 2027 on Thursday.

Takaoka, 29, was an MLS All-Star and Goalkeeper of the Year finalist in 2025 with a league-high 13 clean sheets.

He has recorded 35 shutouts in 129 starts across all competitions since arriving from Japan¡¯s Yokohama F. Marinos in 2023.

¡°Since joining us in 2023, Yohei has become a key figure within our club, consistently demonstrating why he is regarded as one of the league¡¯s top players in his position,¡± sporting director Axel Schuster said. ¡°Beyond his performances on the pitch, he is a consummate professional with outstanding character, and we are thrilled to welcome him back.¡±

Takaoka has helped Vancouver win three consecutive Canadian Championships. In 2025, the Whitecaps reached the MLS Cup final and Concacaf Champions Cup final.

Late Wednesday, the Whitecaps announced the signing of homegrown defender Mihail Gherasimencov through the 2027-28 season with an option for 2028-29.

The 20-year-old Moldova international had two goals and four assists in 30 matches in 2025 on loan with Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League.
