On Sunday, for just the third time in 74 tournaments, a college freshman claimed the title of amateur yokozuna.
The rare feat was achieved by a student from Nihon University, with Hikaru Samejima joining former alumnus Keita Kushima (1983) and Nippon Sport Science University¡¯s Hidetora Hanada (2020) in one of amateur sumo¡¯s most exclusive clubs.
Saitama Prefecture native Samejima downed Yasuhiro Mori of Kanazawa Gakuin University in the final bout of the day-long meet held at Tokyo¡¯s Ryogoku Kokugikan.
