Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes sustained a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter of a 21-7 road win over the Cleveland Browns and was replaced by veteran signal-caller Carson Wentz on Sunday.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid did not immediately think the injury was serious.
¡°It¡¯s not broken, that¡¯s what I can tell you,¡± Reid said after the game. ¡°He¡¯ll literally be day-to-day as we go forward. I don¡¯t know how much swelling he has or any of that.¡±
Mahomes got caught up under Cleveland defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson after firing an incompletion with 7:57 left in the game. He hobbled off the field and had his ankle taped on the sideline before Kansas City said he was questionable to return.
Mahomes, however, never checked back in, finishing the day with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 19-for-38 passing. Reid said he vetoed Mahomes¡¯ request to return.
The Chiefs improved to 13-1 with the win and have a busy schedule coming up. The defending Super Bowl champions will face the Houston Texans on Saturday and then travel for a meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers four days later on Christmas Day.
Mahomes, 29, was unsure if he would be recovered for the two games.
¡°It¡¯s hard to say right now,¡± Mahomes said. ¡°Obviously, there¡¯s still adrenaline rolling. And usually it¡¯s the day after you kind of get a good sense of it. I feel like I could have finished the game in different circumstances.
¡°I thought the smart decision we talked about was to put Carson in. He¡¯s played a lot of football games, and he finished the game well.¡±
Wentz threw only two passes, completing both for 20 yards.
In 14 games this season, Mahomes has completed 66.7% of his passes for 3,348 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
