The New York Giants fired head coach Joe Judge on Tuesday after two seasons and a 10-23 record.
The move comes 24 hours after general manager Dave Gettleman opted to retire.
¡°Steve (Tisch) and I both believe it is in the best interest of our franchise to move in another direction,¡± team president John Mara said in a statement Tuesday. ¡°We met with Joe (Monday) afternoon to discuss the state of the team. I met again with Joe this afternoon, and it was during that conversation I informed Joe of our decision. We appreciate Joe¡¯s efforts on behalf of the organization.
¡°I said before the season started that I wanted to feel good about the direction we were headed when we played our last game of the season. Unfortunately, I cannot make that statement, which is why we have made this decision,¡± Mara¡¯s statement went on. ¡°We will hire a general manager and that person will lead the effort to hire a new head coach.¡±
Judge had met with Giants players Monday and talked about the future, an implication that he would be returning for a third season. However, Mara and Tisch had concerns about how Judge would mesh with a new GM, NFL Network reported.
The Giants capped a woeful 4-13 season with a 22-7 loss to Washington on Sunday. The loss was punctuated by Judge¡¯s decision for two quarterback sneaks pinned against his own end zone late in the first half from the victory formation.
