Reggie Geary is done as head coach of the Chiba Jets, the NBL Eastern Conference club announced Wednesday.
He wasn¡¯t out of work for long.
Geary is headed to Nagoya, where he will become the new bench boss for the Mitsubishi Diamond Dolphins.
Geary¡¯s contract with the Jets expired at the end of May.
The 41-year-old Geary was head coach of the Jets for the last two seasons, leading the team to a 52-56 record. In the 2014-15 campaign, he guided Chiba to the postseason as a wild-card team with a 34-20 record (fifth place in the East).
Before his stint with Chiba, Geary, a former University of Arizona guard, was head coach of the bj-league¡¯s Yokohama B-Corsairs between 2011 and 2013. He earned the Coach of the Year award in the 2011-12 season and led the team to the bj-league championship the following year.
Geary is a former NBA guard who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs in the mid-1990s.
¡°Because he coached us for the last two years and led us to the playoffs, it¡¯s disappointing, but we ask (the fans) to keep giving head coach Reggie Geary support,¡± Jets president Shinji Shimada said in the statement.
Mitsubishi hired Spaniard Trifon Poch Lopez before the 2014-15 season, but let him go after just a year. The team¡¯s best scorer, Amath M¡¯baye, who was second in the league in scoring (23.8 points), has left the team as well.
The Diamond Dolphins put up a 29-25 record, good enough for second place in the Western Conference, last season, but were swept by the Toyota Alvark in the first round of the playoffs.
