Having to withdraw from the Olympics because of injury is every athlete’s worst nightmare.

Kokone Kondo has found herself in that position at back-to-back Winter Games — first in Beijing and now in Milan — and online bullying has only deepened the heartbreak of her latest setback.

Last week, the 22-year-old freestyle skier shared a screenshot in an Instagram story showing one comment she received after pulling out of last week’s slopestyle competition at the Milano Cortina Games that read: “You’d be better off sitting out next time, even if you qualify.”

Amid the heat and humidity in Japan, a good night’s sleep is growing increasingly elusive without the heavy use of air conditioning.
