With time running out to pass a key piece of legislation on establishing a backup capital, a last-minute extension of Japan¡¯s current parliamentary session appears likely.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi¡¯s ruling coalition is expected to submit a request for an extension ¡ª up to 10 days ¡ª by Friday to speakers of both chambers of parliament and vote on it later that day.
If approved by the Lower House, where the Liberal Democratic Party holds a two-thirds majority, the extension is approved regardless of what happens in the Upper House.
