A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture early Sunday, the latest in a spate of temblors to shake the area.
The quake, which occurred at 5:21 a.m., registered a lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture. No tsunami warning was issued.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was at a depth of approximately 40 kilometers.
Sunday＊s temblor came just days after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit northern Japan. The JMA had urged the public to remain vigilant for earthquakes with a maximum seismic intensity of around an upper 6 for about a week following that quake.
On Friday, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook Yamanashi and its surrounding prefectures, prompting concern of possible landslides after days of heavy rain.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi noted that quakes ※have been occurring continuously§ in the Iwate area, and that she had ※once again issued instructions to assess the extent of the damage and provide timely and accurate information to the public.§
※I understand that residents are going through anxious times, but I ask that you remain vigilant and do not let your guard down,§ she wrote.
