Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held brief talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France on Tuesday, exchanging views on the Indo-Pacific even as the crisis in the Middle East continued to dominate the gathering.

During the exchange, which lasted around five minutes, the two leaders discussed issues including China and confirmed that they would ¡°continue to maintain close communication in responding to developments in the international situation,¡± according to a Foreign Ministry readout.

China has in recent years intensified its maritime activities around self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, and in the disputed South China Sea, with Japan¡¯s annual white paper stating last year that Chinese drills around the island are thought to include training for a broader campaign to bring Taiwan under its control, including via a possible invasion.
