Saitama Prefectural Police arrested a 43-year-old man Tuesday on suspicion of obstructing business operations after he posted a video of himself allegedly pouring a detergent-like liquid over a plate of sushi at a restaurant on social media.
Yuta Shinnishi, an unemployed man from the town of Moroyama, Saitama Prefecture, has admitted to the allegation, according to police. He was quoted as saying he ¡°wanted to get more views¡± on social media.
Shinnishi had around 12,000 followers on TikTok, and has previously posted several other videos often referred to as ¡°rage-bait¡± ¡ª online content deliberately designed to elicit anger or outrage.
In a video posted to his TikTok account Monday, Shinnishi apologized, saying: ¡°I would like to apologize to the staff and everyone who works at Hama-Sushi. I have no idea why I did it. It was stupid.¡± He was arrested the following day.
Police allege that on May 27, Shinnishi filmed a video at a Hama-Sushi conveyor-belt sushi restaurant in the prefecture showing him pouring what appeared to be dishwashing detergent onto an item he had ordered on the belt, then posted it on social media, thus interfering with the operator¡¯s business.
According to police, Zensho Holdings, the Tokyo-based company that operates Hama-Sushi, contacted authorities after the video spread online.
The company said such behavior ¡°is absolutely unacceptable¡± and that it is considering its response, including seeking damages.
