On Monday evening, Japanese baseball manager Shinnosuke Abe of the Yomiuri Giants was arrested in Tokyo for allegedly assaulting his teenage daughter inside their home.
According to police and contemporaneous media reports, the case began when the daughter contacted a child guidance center earlier the same day, alleging she had been assaulted. The center then alerted police, who went to the family home and made the arrest. Abe was later released pending further investigation and resigned from the Giants on Tuesday.
The episode briefly ricocheted through Japanese media not only because of who was involved, but because of how quickly it moved through the country¡¯s child protection system: from a report to welfare authorities to a police intervention in a matter of hours.
