A body missing its upper half was found in the mountains of Okutama, western Tokyo, on Tuesday, prompting authorities to investigate the possibility of a fatal bear attack, given evidence of animal activity in the area.

The Metropolitan Police Department discovered the lower half of a human body ¡ª whose gender and age have not yet been identified ¡ª in the afternoon, approximately 100 meters off a hiking trail in Nippara, in the town of Okutama, located in a rural area?of Tokyo.

According to the Ome Police Station, a member of the force noticed what appeared to be a human body on the slope below a hiking trail while out hiking on a day off on May 14. Police officers and members of a hunting association later searched the area and found the body on Tuesday. A backpack and other belongings were also found nearby.
