Kyoto police rearrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of murdering his 11-year-old adopted son, whose body was found in a wooded area in Nantan, Kyoto Prefecture, last month.

The suspect, Yūki Adachi, had already been arrested on suspicion of abandoning the body of his son, Yuki Adachi, a student at Sonobe Elementary School in the city.

According to investigative sources, police believe the killing may have taken place in a public restroom about 2 kilometers from the family’s home in Nantan on March 23, the day the boy disappeared.

Before his April 16 arrest on suspicion of abandoning the body, Adachi reportedly told investigators during voluntary questioning that he “strangled him to death after getting into an argument.”

Based on the suspect’s statements and the condition of the body, Kyoto Prefectural Police determined there was sufficient evidence to pursue a murder charge, the sources said.

The boy was last seen by his mother eating breakfast at home on the morning of March 23 before he went missing. His body was discovered on April 13 in the mountains about 8 km northeast of the family residence.

An autopsy was unable to determine the exact cause of death, though it was estimated he died in late March.

Adachi initially told police he had driven the boy near his school before losing track of him. However, security camera footage from around the school did not confirm the child was in his car, according to investigators.

Police believe the suspect temporarily abandoned the body at multiple locations, including near the public restroom believed to be the crime scene and in another wooded area where the boy’s school backpack was later found, before repeatedly transporting the body by car.

Investigators have also found that portions of data from the suspect’s vehicle dashboard camera were missing after the boy disappeared. Police suspect the footage may have been deleted in an attempt to delay discovery of the body.
