Japan over the weekend marked the 10th anniversary of the implementation of its landmark national security legislation, as the scope of the Self-Defense Forces¡¯ activities continues to expand.
The rapidly deteriorating scene in the Middle East following the start of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran in late February has raised speculation that Japan may for the first time recognize a ¡°survival-threatening situation¡± under the legislation. Under such a situation, the country is allowed to exercise the right to collective self-defense.
Meanwhile, growing uncertainty over the international situation has prompted opposition parties to renew their calls for strengthening the parliament¡¯s oversight of the SDF.
