Ofunato, Iwate Pref. – In an empty office overlooking the ocean, abalone aquaculture farmer Suehiro Furukawa is plotting yet another comeback, his third in 15 years.
The 57-year-old second-generation president of Genshoei Kitanihon Suisan, a major abalone farming business in the city of Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, saw his entire land-based aquaculture operation get swept away by giant tsunamis triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011.
Furukawa rebuilt his business from scratch and started to see his years of hard labor pay off when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
