Major Japanese publisher Shogakukan is in hot water for rehiring an author convicted of sexual assault to write for its platform, the Manga One app, and allowing him to work under a pseudonym.
In 2020, a manga author who went by the pen name Shoichi Yamamoto was arrested for violating the Child Prostitution and Child Pornography Prohibition Act. The series he was writing on Manga One, ¡°Daten Sakusen,¡± was subsequently suspended.
Yamamoto, who was also working as a high school teacher in Hokkaido while he produced the manga, had used his position at the school to force a student in her teens to repeatedly engage in sexual acts with him over the course of the three years she attended the school.
