The U.S. recently paid the United Nations a small fraction of the roughly $2 billion it owed to the world body, which has warned of a funding crisis.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump made the $160 million contribution ¡ª the first such payment since Trump returned to office ¡ª last week as a partial payment for past dues to the U.N.¡¯s regular budget, U.N. spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said.

The payment was reported earlier Thursday by the Associated Press.

The U.S. is traditionally responsible for 22% of the U.N. budget but Trump administration officials have slashed foreign aid spending and withdrawn from some global organizations, including 31 U.N. entities ¡ª accusing them of working against U.S. national interests.

The U.S. now owes about $1.2 billion in arrears, on top of a $767 million bill for 2026. It¡¯s unclear whether the U.S. will pay the full amount back.

Those unpaid dues have helped drive some of the U.N.¡¯s recent financial woes. In January, Secretary General Antonio Guterres asked all member states to pay their dues, saying the U.N. risked ¡°imminent financial collapse¡± and could run out of cash as soon as July.

The recent U.S. payment is only about 7% of what the White House owed before making the payment. But it marks at least a small level of cooperation with an organization that Trump has repeatedly criticized.

Trump has instead been focused on his Board of Peace, which met for its first formal meeting on Thursday. While it was initially meant to administer Gaza after the war, Trump cast the body as a substitute for the U.N. and suggested it is ¡°going to almost be looking over the United Nations, and making sure it runs properly.¡±

The U.S. Mission to the U.N. did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

While the U.S. refused to pay its mandatory U.N. budget fees of $826 million for 2025, the Trump administration did pledge $2 billion to the U.N.¡¯s humanitarian arm in December.
