A 61-year-old man was arrested in the city of Fukuoka on Thursday after allegedly stabbing two men and a woman in a library, police said.
The Fukuoka Prefectural Police said they received an emergency call at around 7:50 p.m. that day, with the caller reporting that several people had been stabbed and that a security guard had secured a man who was holding a knife.
Police arrested the suspect, Tatsuo Yoshii, at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. Yoshii has admitted to stabbing the three people, and reportedly told investigators that he did not know them.
Investigators said the suspect was on the first floor of the municipal-run library when he allegedly stabbed a man in his 80s in the abdomen, seriously injuring him. The security guard, who is in his 70s, and a 50-year-old woman were also attacked. They sustained injuries on their neck and hands.
The three victims have been taken to medical institutions in the city. All of them are conscious and are not in any life-threatening condition.
Police seized a knife from the suspect and are investigating the motive for the attack.
The library is located about 1.5 kilometers west of Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka in an area with condominiums, a hospital and a park.
