Peru¡¯s President Jose Jeri was ousted by Congress after just four months in office, adding to a saga of political instability that¡¯s seen eight leaders pass through the country¡¯s top job since 2016.
Jeri is the fourth president to be removed from power in Peru since 2018, though two others resigned during that time period to avoid impeachment. His interim presidency was never meant to be long, and voters will head to the polls to elect a new leader in April.
Peru is notorious for ousting its presidents ¡ª and imprisoning them more than anywhere else in the world. Still, it remains one of Latin America¡¯s most stable economies. The country¡¯s stocks and sovereign bonds didn¡¯t react to the president¡¯s removal on Tuesday afternoon. Its currency, the sol, closed for trading before the vote was finalized.
