The ruling Liberal Democratic Party¡¯s approval rating remained high, at 41%, following its landslide victory in the Lower House election under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, while support for the Democratic Party for the People (DPP) and Sanseito stayed sluggish, according to a Nikkei poll released Monday.
The strong post-election showing followed the Takaichi-led LDP¡¯s two-thirds majority win in the Feb. 8 Lower House election ¡ª a stark contrast to last July¡¯s Upper House race, when the party¡¯s approval rating fell to 24% under then-Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who later resigned after losing a majority.
Respondents to the survey conducted over the weekend, however, were less enthusiastic about the LDP¡¯s dominance in the Lower House. Forty-nine percent said the party could have won fewer seats, while 44% said the outcome was appropriate. Only 4% said they would have preferred the LDP to win more seats.
