China¡¯s top diplomat said ¡°ghosts of militarism¡± are haunting Japan, warning of ¡°a very dangerous development in Asia,¡± less than a week after a resounding general election victory by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi¡¯s Liberal Democratic Party.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi¡¯s comments during a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference in the German city Saturday poured cold water on an entreaty by Japan¡¯s defense chief a day earlier urging a return to dialogue. Ties between the Asian powerhouses remain in a deep freeze in the wake of Takaichi¡¯s November remarks about possible Japanese military intervention in a Taiwan crisis.

¡°If Japan doesn¡¯t truly repent for its wrongdoing, history will only repeat itself,¡± Wang said. ¡°Japanese people should not let far-right extremists move and drag them down. ... If you go back down that old road, it will be a dead end. If you try gambling again, the loss will be faster and more devastating.¡±
