Keir Starmer shored up his position as U.K. prime minister during a dramatic day in Westminster that at times seemed like he might be forced to step down. The reprieve is likely only to be temporary.
Figures across the governing Labour Party said that Starmer appeared to be safe in the immediate term after he secured the public support of every minister, including potential rivals Wes Streeting and Ed Miliband, as well as another possible successor, former deputy premier Angela Rayner. That was echoed by rank-and-file MPs late Monday, after Starmer delivered what some described as his most passionate speech yet.
¡°After having fought so hard for the chance to change our country, I¡¯m not prepared to walk away from my mandate and my responsibility to my country, or to plunge us into chaos,¡± Starmer told MPs at a closed-doors parliamentary meeting, according to a readout provided by his office.
