Chile¡¯s incoming president, Jose Antonio Kast, toured El Salvador¡¯s notorious mega-prison on Friday, one stop on a weeklong trip focused on showcasing his commitment to beefing up security once he takes office in March.
Kast visited the maximum-security compound called ¡°Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo,¡± known as CECOT, where photos showed him walking through the compound against a backdrop of metal bars framing rows of white-shirted inmates seated facing forward, many wearing blue face masks.
The scene evoked controversial images from U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem¡¯s visit to CECOT last year.
