In a rare move, the University of Tokyo held a news conference on Wednesday to apologize for a series of bribery scandals involving its staff, as well as explain the details of what had happened and governance failures that allowed the misconduct to occur.
¡°We sincerely apologize for having severely undermined the trust placed in us by society as an institution of education and research,¡± the university¡¯s president, Teruo Fujii, said.
The news conference was held following the indictment of 62-year-old Shinichi Sato, a professor at the University of Tokyo¡¯s Graduate School of Medicine and a practicing doctor at the hospital¡¯s dermatology department, for allegedly accepting big-ticket entertainment services at luxury clubs and brothels.
