The Kumamoto District Court rejected a retrial Tuesday in the case of a man believed to have Hansen＊s disease who was executed more than 60 years ago for the murder of a former village official.
It was a rare case in which a retrial was sought for a defendant who had already been executed.
The focus of the retrial was whether a special court held inside a sanatorium for Hansen＊s disease patients in which court proceedings were not open to the public was unconstitutional, and if the ruling which came out of it should be considered invalid.
