The Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA) ¡ª a new party formed by the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) and Komeito ¡ª announced its basic policies and party platform on Monday, outlining its positions on security legislation and nuclear energy and pledging to permanently scrap the consumption tax on food.
Established last week, the CRA was pitched by the CDP and Komeito as an offensive strategy to fight against the conservative ruling coalition ahead of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi¡¯s announcement of a February snap election.
Despite just holding 24 seats in the Lower House compared with the CDP¡¯s 148, Komeito appears to have prevailed in policy talks, with its positions on security legislation and nuclear energy reflected in the CRA¡¯s platform.
