An impeachment complaint was filed against Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the House of Representatives, which is dominated by his allies.
It is the first such filing against Marcos since becoming president in 2022. The complaint was endorsed by a party-list lawmaker who¡¯s aligned with the minority. The complaint accuses Marcos of violating the Constitution and betraying public trust for the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, and for allegedly receiving kickbacks from the government¡¯s flood control projects.
Marcos¡¯ office has yet to respond to a request for comment. His communications chief earlier denied accusations that the president got money meant for flood infrastructure. The leader has also said Duterte¡¯s arrest was in compliance with international commitments.
The complaint will have to undergo hearings at the House, which is led by Marcos¡¯ allies, including his son, Congressman Sandro Marcos. In the chance that the House impeaches Marcos, at least two-thirds of the 24-member Senate needs to vote to convict him.
The attempt to impeach Marcos comes at a critical time for the Southeast Asian nation that¡¯s gripped by allegations of widespread corruption in flood infrastructure. It has slowed economic growth and hit investor sentiment.
It also comes ahead of the expiry of the one-year ban on filing a new impeachment complaint against Marcos¡¯ estranged deputy, Sara Duterte, early next month.
Duterte was impeached nearly a year ago by the House of Representatives on accusations that include plotting to assassinate Marcos and misusing public funds. She denies allegations of wrongdoing. The Senate, which acts as the impeachment trial court, shelved the complaint against the vice president after the Supreme Court ruled it as unconstitutional.
The Southeast Asian nation has a history of impeaching government officials, most notably former President Joseph Estrada and the late Chief Justice Renato Corona.
