U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. government to pull out of 66 international organizations that the White House said ¡°no longer serve American interests.¡±
That includes 31 United Nations entities, as well as 35 non-U.N. organizations ¡°that operate contrary to U.S. national interests, security, economic prosperity, or sovereignty,¡± according to a White House fact sheet issued Wednesday. Trump directed U.S. agencies to cease participating and funding the entities in a presidential memo.
Trump and his allies have long expressed disdain for the U.N., other international organizations and accords. The decision extends the Trump administration¡¯s retreat from international climate diplomacy by pulling back from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the 1992 U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, a treaty that lays out a goal of stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and compels member countries to provide a yearly inventory of that planet-warming pollution.
