Assets held by the 125 lawmakers elected to the Upper House in July last year averaged ?30.82 million ($196,000), a tally showed Monday.
The figure is ?5.47 million higher than the average for Upper House members who won their seats in the previous 2022 election.
The number of lawmakers with assets amounting to ?100 million or more has doubled from four to eight.
The tally is based on reports filed by the 125 Upper House lawmakers under the law covering assets held as of July 29, the day their terms began.
Toshiharu Furukawa of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party reported assets amounting to ?588.5 million, the highest among new Upper House lawmakers; Hidekazu Harada of the opposition Democratic Party for the People (DPP), with assets of ?439.23 million, was in second place. Both hold large amounts of securities.
Takahiro Anno, head of Team Mirai, came in third, at ?360.98 million, followed by Naoki Hyakuta of the Conservative Party of Japan, at ?234.64 million, and the LDP¡¯s Yasuyuki Sakai, at ?220.11 million.
The average value of real estate came to ?13.79 million, and that of financial assets, including time deposits and securities, stood at ?17.02 million. Stocks were not included in the value of financial assets, but the names of stocks lawmakers hold and how many are subject to disclosure.
Twenty lawmakers reported having no financial assets or real estate, including Seiko Hashimoto of the LDP and Renho of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP).
By political party, the average of overall assets stood at ?41.58 million for the LDP, ?16.09 million for the CDP, ?42.51 million for the DPP, ?9.9 million for Komeito, and ?16.48 million for the Japan Innovation Party.
Assets averaged ?5.55 million at Sanseito, ?16.55 million at the Japanese Communist Party, ?5.11 million at Reiwa Shinsengumi, ?147.07 million at the Conservative Party of Japan, ?37.16 million at the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and ?360.98 million at Team Mirai. The averages for Team Mirai and the SDP cover assets held by only one member each.
