U.S. President Donald Trump¡¯s base broadly supports his airstrikes against suspected drug-runners off Venezuela and Colombia, signaling he has the political latitude to keep ratcheting up pressure on Venezuela¡¯s President Nicolas Maduro.
Polling shows that Trump retains widespread backing for a series of attacks that killed more than 90 people. After building up the U.S. military presence in the Caribbean to the highest in decades, Trump has warned about an escalation to possible land strikes.
On Tuesday evening, he pushed even further, declaring a ¡°TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS¡± going into and out of Venezuela. He said the military buildup would continue until the country returns oil, land and other assets ¡°that they previously stole from us.¡±
