Police investigating the stabbing of a woman at a commercial building in Tokyo’s Akasaka district said security camera footage shows the suspect leaving roughly 30 seconds after following the victim inside, indicating that the attack occurred within an extremely short window.

The woman, in her 40s, had arrived at the building at around 10:25 a.m. on Sunday to perform at a live music venue on the basement floor. She was attacked while waiting for the venue to open.

She sustained a deep stab wound to her left abdomen that damaged her internal organs, as well as an injury to her left hand.

According to investigative sources, footage captured near the building’s entrance shows a man, believed to be the attacker, entering the building directly after the woman. About 30 seconds later, he is seen leaving.

Investigators have also confirmed that the man had been loitering around the vicinity for at least two hours beforehand. Security footage also showed the man defacing a promotional poster for the concert, drawing a large “X” mark on it, about 50 minutes before the incident, police said.

A manager of the live house, who had stepped outside to take out the trash shortly before the attack, told police, “When I returned inside, I heard someone screaming.”

Police are investigating the case as attempted murder and are continuing to search for the suspect.

Security camera footage showed the suspect in a black jacket, a cap and a white mask leaving the area by bicycle and heading toward the Aoyama district shortly after the attack.

As investigators pieced together additional footage in a relay review of nearby cameras, they found that the man’s jacket later appeared to be blue, suggesting he changed clothes mid-escape.

Police also found footage showing the man entering the building with what appeared to be plastic bags covering his shoes — a sign the attack was likely premeditated.
