Struggling with a shortage of bus and taxi drivers, transportation operators in Aomori Prefecture are showing strong interest in retiring Self-Defense Forces members seeking a second career.

Many SDF officers retire in their mid-50s, and most of them hold a driver¡¯s license for large vehicles, creating the potential for them to work as drivers.

The city of Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture, which hosts the Ground Self-Defense Force¡¯s Camp Hirosaki, and the SDF¡¯s Aomori Provincial Cooperation Office in the city of Aomori are working together to offer information and internship programs for retiring SDF members. The SDF has a provincial cooperation office in each of the prefectures to recruit new officers and help retiring officers find new jobs.
