Services on Tokyo¡¯s Yamanote Line will be this weekend as a result of ongoing construction work at Shibuya Station.
Due to construction work from Friday through Monday, train services will be shut down on the outer loop of the Yamanote Line from Osaki to Ikebukuro stations all day on Saturday. Train services on the inner loop between Ikebukuro and Osaki stations will be suspended on Sunday.
Service will also be reduced along the rest of the Yamanote Line to up to about every 10 minutes as a result of the construction work and will run at different frequencies depending on the day.
For those who want to travel between those stations, the Saikyo Line will be available with increased frequency along with the Shonan-Shinjuku Line and the Sotetsu Line. The Yamanote Line on the nonsuspended loop will also be available.
JR Saikyo and the JR Shonan-Shinjuku Lines will be available for use as alternate lines free of charge using both tickets and IC cards. However, riders transferring to non-JR train lines will need to either purchase tickets or have an IC card containing a commuter pass with predetermined use of the other lines in order to do so.
Riders who use IC cards without a commuter pass to transfer will be required to pay the typical transfer fee at the ticket gate.
Some access points to the Yamanote Line platform will be temporarily unavailable and access to certain ticket gates may be restricted if the platform becomes too crowded.
Renovations at Shibuya Station have been ongoing since 2015 as part of a large-scale renewal project, according to JR East. This weekend¡¯s step will mark the last of five line switches that were scheduled as part of efforts to improve the station.
