PORTLAND, OREGON ¨C Recreational marijuana became legal in Oregon on Wednesday as a voter-approved law took effect that will ultimately see it sold in shops, similar to those operating in Washington state and Colorado.
The new state laws reflect a shifting legal landscape for a drug that remains illegal under federal law. Campaigns for legal pot have started in California and other states, and marijuana is allowed for medical use in half the country¡¯s states.
