Film producer and distributor Toho Co. said Tuesday it posted record group revenue and pretax and net profits on the success of its box-office hit ¡°Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi¡± (¡°Spirited Away¡°).
Toho, one of three major players in the domestic movie industry, said it chalked up a record group pretax profit of 22.14 billion yen for the year to Feb. 28, up 20.7 percent from a year earlier, on record revenues of 200.51 billion yen, up 22.1 percent.
Its consolidated net profit came to a record 10.29 billion yen, up 16.2 percent, with its per-share net profit totaling 555.39 yen, up from 479.79 yen in the previous year.
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the animated ¡°Spirited Away¡± had as of Sunday attracted 23.33 million people and brought in 30.19 billion yen in revenue since its release July 20, according to a Toho official.
As a result, operating revenues in the firm¡¯s movie sector soared 73.6 percent to 36.39 billion yen, boosting operating profits to 5.16 billion yen, up 400 percent.
The Toho group¡¯s overall operating profit surged 38.4 percent to 21.59 billion yen.
In February, the movie became the first animated film to win the Berlin Film Festival¡¯s Golden Bear prize.
The film features a girl who finds herself working in a hot-spring resort catering to spirits and gods.
