Kanazawa, Ishikawa Pref. ¨C This is a busy year for Ohi Chozaemon XI. Fresh on the heels of his induction as a member of the Japan Art Academy in 2025, the acclaimed ceramicist is now marking the 360th anniversary of his family¡¯s legacy with a series of solo exhibitions.
Following a February show in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Ohi brings his refined works to Tokyo¡¯s from May 13 through 18.
Based in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Ohi is the leading figure in Ohi-style ceramics, a school of handformed pottery created on a wheel, rapidly fired and removed from the kiln while still red hot. The resulting thermal shock produces unpredictable colors and textures that give pieces a rustic?aesthetic particularly popular among tea ceremony practitioners.
