On an October evening at Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo¡¯s Motoazabu neighborhood, Takashi Murakami¡¯s signature flowers bloomed across an entire wall, their candy-bright petals beaming against an expanse of gold leaf as celebrities and Champagne lovers gathered beneath them.
The event celebrated the launch of Murakami¡¯s collaboration with Champagne house Dom Perignon, marking his first-ever foray into wine label design. The artist¡¯s pop-art floral motifs replace the traditional grapevine wreath on the bottles of the 2015 vintage (?43,340) and the 2010 Rose (?68,640).
The marriage of fine wine and visual art is not new. Champagne producer Ruinart enlisted Alphonse Mucha for its Art Nouveau posters in 1896. Bordeaux¡¯s Chateau Mouton-Rothschild has commissioned original labels from artists since 1924, with Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali among its contributors.
