A design by architect Kengo Kuma was picked as the 2020 Tokyo Olympic main stadium, after a joint venture led by construction giant Taisei Corp. won the right to build the facility over a rival proposal, the government announced on Dec. 22. Kuma’s proposal, formally known as design A, estimates that the total cost will be ?149 billion and construction will be completed by November 2019, two months earlier than the deadline set by the International Olympic Committee. The proposal features a plant-covered facade and is 5 meters lower in height than the rival proposal, design B. It has been carefully designed to maintain harmony with the natural landscape of the neighboring Meiji Jingu Gaien area. The stadium will have a capacity of 68,000, which can be raised to 80,000 at most to host World Cup soccer finals.
