Visitors to Japan are forever marveling about its high trust society, how you can leave your phone on a table at Starbucks, go to the restroom and, miracle of miracles, find it there when you come back.
In Takayuki Kayano¡¯s ingeniously plotted, quirky caper comedy ¡°How to Steal the Gold,¡± an ordinary housewife named Mikako Fujine (Rena Tanaka) betrays that trust when she slips an orin (Buddhist ceremonial bell) costing ?16 million into her bag while at a department store exhibition of gold art objects.
Based on a real-life 2013 incident, Kayano¡¯s script uses this theft as an absurd springboard for an ¡°Ocean¡¯s Eleven¡±-style heist of all heists, with Mikako triumphantly front and center. In the lengthy build-up to the heist, we learn a lot about why this woman, who is living a quiet,comfortable life in Fukuoka, would risk it all for a momentary thrill.
