Berlin ¨C Yoshitoshi Shinomiya¡¯s debut feature has put him in excellent company.
Before ¡±A New Dawn¡± was selected to compete for the top prize at this year¡¯s Berlin International Film Festival, only two other animated Japanese films had been in contention. The first was ¡°Spirited Away,¡± which won the Golden Bear for Hayao Miyazaki in 2002. The second came in 2023 with Makoto Shinkai¡¯s ¡°Suzume.¡±
Though the prize ultimately went to Turkish-German filmmaker Ilker Catak for his ¡°Yellow Letters,¡± Shinomiya can still take pride in the fact that he joins the company of Miyazaki and Shinkai, the latter of whom he worked with extensively on ¡°Your Name.¡± and ¡°The Garden of Words.¡±
