Hathaway is back. Five years after ¡°Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway,¡± the 2021 anime box-office hit set in the long-running ¡°Gundam¡± sci-fi universe, the follow-up, ¡°Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe¡± continues its mature take on the franchise in fine form.
The titular Hathaway (voiced by Kensho Ono), who first appeared as a teen in the 1988 film ¡°Char¡¯s Counterattack,¡± is ¡ª unbeknownst to those around him ¡ª the leader of a terrorist group called Mafty, which opposes the Earth Federation, a government of rich, corrupt politicians who squander the planet¡¯s resources while employing masked agents to brutally deport undocumented immigrants. So, yeah, total science fiction.
The first film begins with Hathaway traveling to Earth ahead of an important meeting of Federation leaders whom he plans to assassinate. En route, he meets Gigi Andalucia (Reina Ueda), a mysterious young woman, and Kenneth Sleg (Junichi Suwabe), a Federation captain whose mission is to find and destroy Mafty. Gigi, who has abnormal powers of perception, deduces that Hathaway is more than meets the eye. Meanwhile, the three form a strange love triangle as both men find themselves pining for Gigi.
