K2 Pictures, a new film production startup headed by veteran producer Muneyuki Kii, aims to disrupt the Japanese film industry.

Kii explained at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 that he and his collaborators will ¡°create a new ecosystem for Japanese cinema.¡± This would include better working conditions for crews, such as safeguards against overwork and sexual abuse, and better returns to creators.

Key to Kii¡¯s ambitious plans is the establishment of the K2P Film Fund, a film production fund structured with internationalized legal and accounting standards to make it easier for overseas partners to participate.
