The internationally popular animated series ¡°One Piece¡± will be remade from the original first episode to mark the 25th anniversary of the show.
The announcement was made on Sunday at the Jump Festa held in the Makuhari area of Chiba.
Titled ¡°The One Piece,¡± the show is set to be released on streaming services such as Netflix. The release date is yet to be determined.
The new production team includes members from Shueisha, Toei Animation, Fuji Television, Wit Studio and Netflix.
¡°While the original TV animation series is still moving forward at maximum output in its 25th year, through this project, we would like to present Luffy¡¯s adventures in a new and nostalgic way, pursuing styles of expression that are only possible in the current age,¡± ¡°The One Piece¡± production team said in a statement following the announcement. ¡°We will do our best as the ¡±All One Piece¡± team to bring the show to fans around the world as well as to the future generation to enjoy ¡¯One Piece.¡¯¡±
The show will be produced by Wit Studio, the Japanese animation studio behind shows such as ¡°Spy x Family¡± and the first three seasons of ¡°Attack on Titan,¡± in cooperation with Netflix. Being in the initial stages of the production, the studio is currently doing .
¡°We decided to take on this new journey upon much consideration and discussion. A series with over 1,000 episodes produced by the Toei animation studio ¡ª we feel immense responsibility in taking on the weight of the history and drawing a new trajectory for the series,¡± said George Wada, head of Wit Studio in a statement.
The original ¡°One Piece¡± is a manga by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since July of 1997 and is still ongoing, following the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew¡¯s adventures to become the next king of the pirates. It has been 25 years since the anime series was first on air in 1999 and, now on its 1,085th episode, it continues to have a large fan base.
The series remains highly popular. The film ¡°One Piece Film: Red,¡± released last year in theaters, became the highest-grossing in the series, as well as becoming historically the sixth highest-grossing movie in Japan.
Earlier this year, Netflix released a live-action version of the show in English under the direction of Oda, garnering attention worldwide.
