Yasusaburo Hara (1884-1982) was the third chairman of Nippon Kayaku Co., Ltd., a renowned leader in the business world and a zealous collector of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
This exhibition of a selection of works from Hara¡¯s collection focuses on Utagawa Hiroshige¡¯s later years and includes his masterpiece series ¡°One Hundred Famous Views of Edo¡± and ¡°Collection of Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces.¡±
This is the first time that the all the prints of both these ukiyo-e series are being shown to the public. It is also a rare opportunity to see shozuri prints, meaning that they are some of the first impressions from Hiroshige¡¯s blocks. Only a few sets of such high quality ukiyo-e have survived in Japan.
